MP celebrates permanent 1/2 hourly trains for Yate station
Thornbury and Yate MP Claire Young says she is ‘thrilled’ that Yate station is to have half-hourly trains on a permanent basis.
After a long campaign by Ms Young to keep the 30 minute timetable for trains between Bristol and Gloucester, the Government has confirmed that it will be part of the GWR schedule going forward. The current agreement, underwritten by WECA was due to end in May, but the Department for Transport has made it part of the permanent timetable.
Ms Young raised the issue in Parliament recently as she continued to push for the 1/2 hour services to continue, one of five times she has questioned the Government on the subject in the Commons. She has worked closely with local councillors to make sure the 30 minute timetable was made permanent.
The news also means that the new station being built in Charfield will be able to run hourly services.
Ms Young said: “I am thrilled this service will continue for the long term. The news is a real boost, it will support jobs in Yate and also help students to access colleges in the area. After we secured the 30 minute timetable in 2023, there was always a danger it might be taken away, I am delighted that it will become permanent.”
