Claire Young discusses why she wants to be the next MP for Thornbury and Yate

Claire Young lives with her family in the heart of the Thornbury and Yate constituency. She’s lived here for nearly 25 years and both her children attended local schools.

Elected as Leader of South Gloucestershire Council last May, Claire works full time for the community managing a budget of hundreds of millions and helping countless individuals with their problems.

Claire said, “It’s a privilege to live in and represent such a wonderful part of the country.

“As Council Leader I want to make a real difference to the community, in particular with positive changes to protect our environment and help people with the cost of living crisis.

“I recognise that so much of what impacts our area is decided in Westminster and can see the damage the Conservatives are inflicting on the services we rely on. That’s why I’m standing to be our MP next time, to improve our NHS and get a fair deal for local people.”

Claire is out and about each week knocking on doors and visiting community groups.

“Politician’s need to listen more. One of my first tasks as Council Leader was to change the culture of the Council so we engage with people properly about the tough decisions ahead.

“When I speak to residents, they are asking for an MP who can restore some of their faith in politics after a tumultous period of Government. I take the responsibility very seriously both as Leader of the Council and as a Parliamentary Candidate.”

Claire’s background as a mathematician turned software engineer and environmental researcher certainly isn’t a typical one for a politician.

“We only have to look at what’s coming out of the Covid inquiry to see we need more people who understand science in Parliament. We knew about the rule breaking but the lack of understanding is staggering,” Claire added.

So, how does Claire unwind from poltics?

“I love playing football, and hillwalking when I can - and catching up with family and friends.”

As a Councillor, Claire has prided herself on putting the interests of local people first. As our next MP she’ll continue to do that in Westminster.

“People tell me they want a hardworking local MP who’s in touch with and understands the needs of local people during these tough times.

“If elected, I’ll fight hard for South Goucestershire in Parliament. Especially for those struggling through the cost of living crisis or facing long waits for vital hospital treatment. Many of whom are left living unnecessarily in fear, pain or unable to work while waiting for their treatment to begin.”
