Our next Hot Potatoes discussion event will be on the Investigatory Powers Bill, referred to by critics as the 'Snooper's Charter'. Our guest is Lord Paul Strasburger, who is the Liberal Democrat member of the Joint Select Committee which scrutinised the Draft Investigatory Powers Bill.

The Investigatory Powers Bill is the Conservative Government's reworking of the Draft Communications Data Bill, which the Liberal Democrats blocked in government. The Bill will allow the Government to compel communications companies such as BT, Google and Facebook to collect and hand over detailed records of everything you do online. This includes: websites you visit, for whatever purpose; all personal contacts you make, whether with family, friends, service providers or colleagues; and all private records to do with travel arrangements, holidays etc. The Government says this is an essential tool in the fight against terrorism, but critics say the measures go too far and create a surveillance state.

Lord Strasburger will open the discussion with some introductory remarks, and we will then open to the floor for a wide ranging discussion on the Bill. He is keen to hear all your views on the Bill and the issues surrounding it. You can read more about the Investigatory Powers Bill here:
